MA and PhD Program


PhD application deadline: January 2 (for Fall term)

  • Note: For PhD applicants who are not requesting departmental consideration for financial assistance, Fall admissions is open through March 31. January 2 is the primary PhD deadline.
  • Due to the structure of the first two years of the PhD program Spring admissions is not recommended.

MA, MA/JD, and non-degree-seeking applications are due:
November 1 (for Spring term); May 1 (for Fall or Summer)

  • Non-Degree Seeking. Students who are interested in enrolling in graduate level coursework in the Department of Economics without formal admission to a graduate program at KU are encouraged to apply for graduate non-degree seeking student status.

Application Materials

  • Current resume or CV
  • Copies of official transcripts from each university or college you have attended.  
    • Official transcripts are not required until after you have been admitted into the MA or PhD program.
  • Three letters of recommendation.  
    • Contract information for your letter writers will be submitted in your application and they will receive a request to submit a letter on your behalf electronically.
  • Personal statement
    • Please let us know a little bit about you, why you like economics and what career plans you may have.
  • GRE Test Scores (Ph.D. applicants only) 
    • ETS GRE code for KU Economics = 6871
  • TOEFL or IELTS scores (International applicants only)
    • Because we strive to offer strong PhD applicants a comprehensive financial aid package, which typically comes in the form of a paid graduate teaching assistant position, applicants must have the following TOEFL or IELT scores to be considered:
      • TOEFL: Reading, Listening, and Writing part scores at least 20. Speaking 22 (Speaking score only applies to PhD applicants)
        • ETS TOEFL code for KU = 6871
      • IELTS: Minimum overall score 6.0 with no part score below 5.5. Speaking 8 (Speaking score only applies to PhD applicants)
        • IELTS reports can be emailed to graduateadm@ku.edu. The Graduate Admissions' office will then verify your scores and add them to your application (which can be in-progress or submitted)
      • Exceptions for admission: Non-native English speakers may demonstrate proficiency with the following: Graduation with a baccalaureate degree (or higher) earned in residence from an accredited English-medium U.S. college or university or a college or university in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, English-speaking province of Canada, or an English-speaking Caribbean country, with instruction conducted in English. (Please note: if offered GTA position, additional documentation may be requested.)
